In 1848 James Marshall made camp on the American River with a few others at Coloma near Sacramento. They were not there to find gold… they were there to build a saw mill for John Sutter. Late January James Marshall found gold! That is what started the gold rush! Around 500,000 people moved there to get some gold action. For the next few years there were many other gold discoveries that that kept the fire for gold burning.
